Prof. Romāns Vanags is one of Latvia’s leading choral conductors and educators. He studied choral and orchestral conducting at the Jāzeps Vītols Academy of Music in Riga, where he has taught choral conducting since 1987, later became a Professor, and from 2005 to 2012 served as Head of the Conducting Department. Since 1987 he has directed the Boys’ Choir of the Jāzeps Mediņš Music School Riga shaping the nation’s choral life for decades. He has been the organizer of various courses for conductors in numerous countries around the world and also a jury member of many international choral competitions. He has also been appointed as one of the chief conductors of the All Latvian Song Celebration (1993, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2018, 2023).
He is a member of the INTERKULTUR World Choir Council and has served as Artistic Director at INTERKULTUR since 2014. His achievements have earned him numerous honors, including Latvia’s highest state award, the Order of the Three Stars.
In 2008 professor Romāns Vanags received the highest civil decoration in Latvia – the Three Star Order.
